History | Past Chiefs

This page is dedicated to those individuals that have made all our dreams possible. If it were not for those dedicated members to service the Baldwin community, we the FireFighters would not be here today.

On March 17, 1959 in an old farm in Baldwin Borough, a group concerned for the fire protection in the area started a proud tradition. The South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company stands at this same site today. It has grown and prospered due to the hard work of numerous individuals both past and present. The South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company was a small two door garage with dirt floors. In 1967 the members began renovations on the station by adding three bays and a back room. Most of the cost and labor of the new station came out of the member personal funds.

Since that day, many of the  FireFighters today, start as Jr. FireFighters. In 1978 the Fire  Company decided to build a Social Hall behind the firehouse. Ten years after construction the Fire Company paid off their twenty-five year loan. Few years after that, a truck committee was arranged to investigate prices for two brand new trucks. In 1991, the Fire Company bought two E-1 Hush Pumpers. In 1992, members of the Fire Company flew Florida to drive 104 Engine and 104 Rescue to the station. At the same time each truck came with a five inch supply line which made 1969 Mack 100 GPM Enginethe Fire Company one of the first in the South Hills to use that kind of a hose. In 1997, a first responder program was started with Baldwin EMS. The First Responder program is FireFighters with EMT qualifications. They would respond on medical calls within the fire district with the EMS, to assist with patients. Shortly after, the Fire Company purchased an Automated External Defibrillator, (AED) which First Responders use to send an electrical shock through the heart to set the heart back on normal beats.
